0808: As Summer Races Along

IMG_2128_01_LR_10Corn every night from Story’s and an occasional ice cream from Circle W are two of the many things that make this time of year so special around here.

IMG_1257_01_LR_10It has been a very busy time for me in the studio lately. And I am happy to say that it’s getting even busier. So I’ll keep this pretty brief.

IMG_1372_01_LR_10Last chance to see the Small Town Parade Show at the Saugerties Performing Arts Factory  (SPAF). The show has been extended through this weekend, August 10-11. All of us involved are most grateful for the response we received from the community at large. It was a great project for the eleven of us. Drop by if you can. Several of us should be around. including Rivka Katvan, seen below at the opening with her work.

My main focus at the moment is my (rapidly approaching) show in Vermont. We hang the show next Thursday on Isle La Motte, as lovely a site for a show as any I have ever found. On this island sits the Chazy Fossil Reef, formed 480 million years ago. It’s a fascinating place, much of which has been saved thanks to the hard work of Linda Fitch and her associates. Their efforts led to the establishment of the Isle La Motte Preservation Trust, the organization that looks after things up there.

The show is a collection of images I made from our visit over a year ago. The gastropod above is one of twenty five pieces that will be exhibited. I’ll try to have more on the show before we leave on Wednesday. In the meantime, I have a stack of prints and frames to attend to!

The opening will be held on Sunday afternoon, August 18 from 1-5 PM at Fisk Farm.

Fisk Farm is located directly north of the Fisk Quarry Preserve

3849 West Shore Road
Isle La Motte, VT 05463

I’ve been working on a number of gastropod images, so wouldn’t I start seeing them wherever I go – the other day in Woodstock, the wet sidewalk seemed to be weighing in!

On another note, a stroll in Hudson the other day yielded this pair of color pieces.

IMG_2162_01_LR_10I moved to the left for this next one.

IMG_2161_01_LR_12It was the “ow” that caught my attention. It was speaking to me. The stroll was catching up with me – a herniated disc introduced itself while on my recent artists’ residency at Platte Clove – and it seems to want to hang around for a while. Despite it, that time spent up there was magical. And two of the images from that stay will be part of a show at the end of the month at the Catskill Center in Arkville. I’ll have more on that upon my return from Vermont. Here are the two that were chosen:

IMG_1252comp_01_LR_12An abbreviated post today. Between the holiday and deadlines it’s been difficult to get some new shooting into the schedule. Daily rain has hampered the search for the next great fossil find. So I’ll start with a goodbye to the cicadas – at least I think they’re almost gone.

Fortunately, they barely made an appearance of any sort here at my studio. My friends a mile down the road, on the other hand, have been living through some kind of SciFi Hell! Can’t stand outside talking kind of noise. A quick run down there with fossil and drawer and a cast of millions standing by got me this image.

One final reminder about our opening on Friday (July 5):

_MG_2290_01_LR_10Speaking of SciFi Hell, Cindy and I drove down to the Meadowlands in New Jersey last Saturday. My son Shaun was in town to perform at the New Jersey State Fair. It’s always a treat to see him perform, regardless of venue.

_MG_2345_01_LR_10While he was busy I had time to check out the Fair itself. I’ve been to many state and county fairs across the country and never before had I seen one without animals! I heard that they were having pig races somewhere but nowhere did I find the 4H world in attendance.

_MG_2349_01_LR_10Plenty of fake boardwalk freak show attractions, from The World’s Smallest Woman

IMG_1271_01_LR_10…to Zambora the Gorilla Girl

_MG_2300_01_LR_10…to Frog Girl. Do you see a pattern here? Did we run out of male freaks? Bad taste often accompanies sexism and it seemed that both were in abundance at this Fair.

_MG_2323_01_LR_10Fortunately, I was able to fish something sweet out of the event – a little girl captivated by bubbles on a late Summer afternoon.

_MG_2639_01_LR_10Here was the entire reason for the trip – Shaun Balin on fiddle with American Idol star Lauren Alaina. Fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and backup vocals – hardest working musician I know! It’s always a pleasure to hear you play, Shaun!

0627: Small Town Parade

MangerRegular readers of this blog might remember this image of mine, entitled “American Manger.” It was taken last year (July 4, 2102 to be precise) and is part of a show set to open on July 5. The show, entitled Small Town Parade, is the product of eleven photographers (myself included) who gathered together to cover the annual Saugerties, NY Fourth of July Parade.

_______________

Like parades occurring in thousands of small towns all across the country that day, they each reflect the local community pride as well as the collective love of country. While they all share common elements, they each have a flavor unique to their respective community. As a group we set off to capture these various elements and, encouraged by the results, we now wish to share our observations with the community. Please join us if you are in the vicinity.

Seldom do we photographers have the opportunity to work with others, photography being  a rather solitary pursuit. This project allowed for it, much to the benefit of each of us. A wonderful sense of joint purpose and camaraderie infused this effort and we believe is present in this exhibit.

01aI’ll be back with fossils next week.
